Malygos - Facts
  • Level: ?? (Boss)
  • Classification: caption (Boss)
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: caption Blue Wyrm (Dragonkin)
  • Health: 6.9 million (10-man)
    19.5 million (25-man)

Summoning Malygos requires at least one member to have completed the quest given by [Heroic Key to the Focusing Iris] which will allow him to be summoned in either 10 or 25 man versions ([Key to the Focusing Iris] for the 10 man only version). Sapphiron, the gigantic undead frost wyrm who guards the entrance to Kel'Thuzad's inner sanctum in Naxxramas, drops both of these items, with the heroic key being from 25man Naxx, and the non-heroic key being from 10man Naxx. The encounter has three phases. Loot from Malygos is contained in Alexstrasza's Gift, which spawns after Malygos is defeated.

Abilities

  • 19,523,000 HP
  • Frontal Cleave - 180 degrees
  • Rear Tail swipe - Unlike other dragon bosses he does not have a tail swipe.
  • Enrage: Malygos has a 10 minute enrage timer, at which point his damage is increased by 1000%. This timer carries over across all phases, therefore the entire encounter must be completed within 10 minutes.
Phase 1
  • Arcane Breath: Inflicts ~30k Arcane damage in a 40 yard frontal cone. After 5 seconds, those hit will explode, inflicting ~20k Arcane damage to all nearby.
  • Arcane Storm: Arcane missiles strike a few random members for ~12k Arcane damage.
  • Vortex: Malygos flies and creates a vortex of Arcane energy, tossing the raid around and dealing ~2k Arcane damage per second for 10 seconds (~20k total). When the Vortex ends, everyone will be dropped around the center of the platform and take up to 10% of their maximum health in falling damage. Iceblock, Shadowstep, etc. can let you escape the Vortex.
  • Power Sparks: At regular intervals throughout the encounter after the first Vortex, a portal will appear in the empty space away from the platform, between two of the pillars, and spawn a Power Spark. This Power Spark will slowly move towards Malygos and must be killed before reaching him, otherwise Malygos will gain a temporary buff which increases all damage done by 50%. When a Power Spark is killed, it will leave a temporary patch of electricity on the ground which increases the damage dealt by those standing in it by 50%. It is possible to kill multiple Power Sparks in the same position, which will in turn stack the 50% damage buff multiple times. During Vortex, any living Power Sparks will stop moving; however, once you begin to fall from Vortex, they will start moving again. Power Sparks can be snared, rooted, stunned, incapacitated, Death Gripped, and so on.
Phase 2 Malygos starts to fly around at 50% health. Any Power Sparks that reach him after phase 2 begins will have no effect. Malygos himself is not targetable during this phase.
  • Arcane Storm: Arcane missiles strike a few random members for ~12k Arcane damage.
  • Deep Breath: Inflicts 5k Arcane damage per second to the entire raid for 5 seconds (~25k total). The emote "Malygos takes a deep breath" is given just before it is used. This ability does not effect anyone flying on a disc.
  • Power Overload: Purple anti-magic zones will randomly appear on the platform, knocking back anyone nearby when they appear. Anyone standing inside one of these zones will take 50% less magic damage. These zones will shrink and disappear as time goes on.
  • Nexus Lords will spawn at the beginning of phase 2. They stand upon floating discs and descend to the ground. They should be tanked normally and will drop their discs to the ground when they die, allowing members to fly up and engage the Scions of Eternity. Casters using a disc can cast and fly at the same time.
    • Arcane Shock: Inflicts ~15.5k Arcane damage.
    • Haste: Increases movement, casting, and attack speed by 100% for 15 seconds - dispellable.
  • Scions of Eternity will spawn at the beginning of phase 2. They all fly upon floating discs. They have no aggro table and will periodically cast Arcane Barrage on random members. Upon death, it will drop its disc to the ground, allowing members to fly up and engage the rest. Casters using a disc can cast and fly at the same time.
    • Arcane Barrage: Inflicts ~18k Arcane damage to a random member.
Phase 3 Malygos shatters the platform when all of the Scions of Eternity and Nexus Lords are dead. Everyone drops onto red drakes, which will be used to kill Malygos.
  • Arcane Pulse: Inflicts ~30k Arcane damage to all within 30 yards of Malygos.
  • Static Field: Creates an electric blue orb on a random member. Inflicts ~10k Arcane damage per second to all within 30 yards of it. Lasts for about 60-120 sec.
  • Surge of Power: Malygos will target a random member and give them a warning that Malygos is focusing on them. Malygos will then shoot a beam at his target, dealing 24k Arcane damage every second for 3 seconds. Splash damage of 5k Arcane damage per second to all near the primary target for 5 seconds will also be done.
  • Drake Mount Abilities
    1. Flame Spike
    2. Engulf in Flames
    3. Revivify (target the drake, not the person)
    4. Life Burst
    5. Flame Shield
    6. Blazing Speed

Only differences from the 25 version are listed here.

Malygos Boss Strategy

Phase 1

Malygos has a 10 minute enrage timer that starts from the moment he lands and engages the raid. This timer DOES NOT reset on the start of any of the 3 phases and carries through all of them till he is killed or the raid wipes.

During Phase 1, Malygos will be tanked on the edges of the circular platform facing away from the raid.

The tank will need to navigate and move him around to avoid him coming in contact with any spawned Power Spark's.

Power Sparks

Power Sparks are spawned in 1 of 4 locations around the outside of the large platform the fight takes place on. The spawn locations are identified by a bright blue star out in space. These sparks will head directly for Malygos, so the tank needs to navigate him around to avoid Malygos from coming into contact with one. If he does, his damage is increased by 50% for 10 seconds. While in 10-man this can be healed through, on 25 it can mean a wipe easily since his damage output is already substantially higher on 25-man.

2 DPS classes should be assigned to Power Spark stacking. Generally its a best option to have Death Knights handle the sparks since they can use Death Grip to position the sparks in an optimum location for raid DPS to stand in. Having 2 on this detail will insure that one Death Knight always has a Death Grip available to grab a Power Spark.

Sparks move somewhat slowly once they spawn, however when Malygos casts Vortex on the raid the sparks will stop in place temporarily until the spell is over. Instead of resuming normal speed however, once the Vortex ends they will "speed up" to catch up to where they would be if they had been moving during the AOE spell. It is important that the persons on spark duty as well as the Main Tank know the positions of these sparks before the Vortex begins so that Malygos can be pulled away from them and they can be managed before they reach him.

Sparks are susceptible to root effects but not slowing effects. Spells like Entangling Roots, Chains of Ice and Frost Nova will keep the sparks in place but any slowing effects associated with the spell like Chains of Ice will not work, only the root portion of the spell.

A suggested macro to use for Death Knights is:

#showtooltip
/cleartarget
/clearfocus
/tar Power Spark
/focus
/stopmacro [target=focus, noexists]
/cast [target=focus] Death Grip

Spark "stacking" is preferred during Phase 1 which is pulling all the spawned sparks to one spot to stack the buff they give to the raid. Each spark residue will increase any DPS standing in it by 150%, the effect is stackable infinitely however the limitation is that each residue zone only lasts for 90 seconds. Each stack gives 150% bonus so 2 sparks is (150%x150%=225%), 3 is (150%x150%x150%=337%) etc.

All DPS classes needs to make sure they stand in any Spark residue on the ground during Phase 1 as timing is critical. The faster Phase 1 is done, the more time is left to complete Phases 2 and 3 and beat his 10 minute enrage timer.

Arcane Storm

Roughly every 5 seconds during Phase 1, Malygos will use his Arcane Storm which will hit 5 random people other than the Main Tank. This damage needs to be healed up by the raid healers quickly before his next use of the spell or people will quickly start to die off. Having healers with AOE heal effects focus on the raid is the preferred option since they can spam heal all 5 targets up quickly before the next barrage.

Vortex

Every so often Malygos will take flight during Phase 1 and use his Vortex spell on the raid. When he does this, everyone will be caught up in a tornado in the center of the platform and take AOE arcane damage. Only instant cast spells will work during this effect so healers with instant cast heals should continue to heal anyone within range of them. Its also important to have everyone in the raid topped off right before this effect so that its more likely they will survive it. When the effect ends, everyone in the raid will take some slight fall damage as well so its important healers keep an eye on everyone's health.

When Malygos finishes this spell, he will land in the center of the platform and resume his attack on the main tank. Its important for the tank to grab him right away and position him away from the raid and the sparks.

healers will have about 5 seconds or so to spam up the raid to full after each Vortex before Malygos starts casting his Arcane Storm again.

Phase 2

When Malygos hits 50% health, he will take flight and yell a long speech. The raid will have approximately 30 seconds to DPS him some more before he becomes un-targetable. Its recommended that everyone do as much damage as possible to him during this time and use any remaining sparks to increase DPS as any damage done to him will make Phase 3 go faster.

When he flys off, NPCs will spawn on discs around the platform.

Nexus Lord

Nexus Lords will appear at the start of Phase 2. Nexus Lords have two abilities Arcane Shock (Arcane Shock 10-man) and Haste and have an aggro table, thus they must be tanked upon reaching the ground.

Scion of Eternity

Scions of Eternity will spawn along with Nexus Lords in Phase 2. Scions however do not have an aggro table and only have one ability, Arcane Barrage (Arcane Barrage 10-man). Scions cannot be attacked by melee DPS that are not on discs, and when defeated will drop discs to the ground allowing more raid members to get on them. These mobs can be stunned and silenced which will help ease the raid damage being done during Phase 2.

DPS should be prioritized to melee focusing on the Nexus Lords and range DPS focusing on Scions at the start of Phase 2 once everyone is inside a bubble. As each mob dies it drops a disc which can be used by melee DPS to fly up and allow them to DPS the Scions. Once all the melee have discs, its possible for range DPS to use them as well, however unnecessary though.

  • 10-Man
    • (2) Nexus Lords
    • (4) Scion of Eternity
  • 25-Man
    • (4) Nexus Lords
    • (8) Scion of Eternity

During Phase 2, protective bubbles spawn at random spots around the platform. These bubbles will reduce all magical damage taken by 50% so its important that all the raid stand inside these bubbles. These bubbles will slowly shrink over time so its important that everyone stands directly in the center of them. As the bubble shrinks, more will appear in other locations. The raid doesnt need to move to the next bubble as soon as it spawns, generally you can move to every other bubble.

Eoe protective bubbles p2.jpg

Melee DPS on the discs do not need to worry about staying inside the bubble's.

Deep Breath

Malygos will from time to time cast Deep Breath, hitting the whole platform with massive arcane damage that deal 5000 damage per second to anyone on the ground caught outside a protective bubble. Melee DPS on discs dont need to worry about avoiding the Deep Breaths.

Healing Notes for Phase 2

Healers will need to focus heals on anyone in the raid taking damage and spam them up as quickly as possible. Even in a protective bubble, Scions of Eternity can 2-shot anyone in the raid. Its critical to keep the raid topped off throughout Phase 2 especially during movement from one bubble to the next. During Malygos' Deep Breath's its especially important everyone is topped off as well and any AOE type heal spells should be used.

Once the last mob has been killed Phase 3 will start.

Phase 3

When Phase 3 begins, everyone should run to the southern part of the platform before the floor breaks apart. This will make sure everyone is starting in the same spot together.

As soon as the floor collapses the raid will fall onto Red Drakes. Each Drake has a series of abilities:

Drake Abilities

  • Flame Spike - Fires a quick jet of fire at your target, causing 943 to 1057 Fire damage. Awards 1 combo point.
  • Engulf in Flames - Launches a blast of flames, igniting your target for 1500 Fire damage every 3 sec. This effect stacks. Lasts longer per combo point.
  • Revivify - Heals the target for 500 per second. Lasts 10 sec. Awards one combo point. Stacks up to 5 times.
  • Life Burst - Releases a burst of rejuvenating energy, healing friendly targets within 60 yards and increasing the caster's healing done by 50%. Heals for more and lasts longer per combo point.
  • Flame Shield - Surrounds the caster in a shield of flames, reducing all damage taken by 80%. Lasts longer per combo point.
  • Blazing Speed - Increases flight speed by 500% for 8 sec.

Raid Movement

MalygosStaticAlarm

The raid needs to move as a group around the 4 compass points on the minimap around Malygos throughout Phase 3. Since everyone should be starting at the South point, each time Malygos uses his Static Field ability, the raid should move 1/4 around the map in a counter-clockwise direction. S, E, N, W and repeat till hes dead. It's important that the raid moves out of Static Field as quickly as possible.

Its also imperative that the raid stay close together to maximize the efficiency of healing on the drakes.

DO NOT get within 30 yards of Malygos on your drake to avoid taking damage from Arcane Pulse. There is an addon called MalygosStaticAlarm that can help notify you when Malygos uses this ability by turning your screen yellow. (see right)

To make things easier on movement, its suggested to designate someone as the movement pinpoint and have everyone in the raid follow them using a macro of:

/follow Shadowwolf

DPS Role on Drakes

The majority of the raid, to include healers will need to DPS Malygos on Phase 3 using the drake's abilities. Since typically you will only have 3-4 minutes remaining on the enrage timer to complete Phase 3, its better to minimize the total healers you have for the raid. Also, if everyone does things properly, very little healing will be necessary. If you are tasked to DPS, your main abilities to use will be:

MalygosCP

Flame Spike will create combo points on Malygos and Engulf in Flames is used as a finishing move. Being as Engulf in Flames stacks in damage, its easier to just use it after 2-3 combo points so your DPS rotation should typically be (Key sequence: 1,1,2) or (Key sequence: 1,1,1,2).

The goal is to stack as many Engulf in Flames on Malygos as possible.

A good macro to use is:

/tar malygos
/castsequence reset=target Flame Spike, Flame Spike, Engulf in Flames

DO NOT use any of the heal abilities on your drake as a DPSer. Using these heals will use up your combo points as will changing targets. Make sure you keep Malygos targeted at all times.

There is also an addon called MalygosCP which can help you track your energy, combo points and debuff stacks without having to look at the target frame. (see right)

Healing Role on Drakes

To be effective on Phase 3, its good to only use a small number of healers on the drakes. For 10-man its usually only 2 people healing, on 25-man its usually only 3 healing. The main drake abilities you'll be using to heal are:

The best way to effectively heal the raid on Phase 3 is not to try and heal each target individually and just use the Life Burst effectively. To do this, its easier to target your own drake and use the Revivify to create combo points. A good practice is to use 2-3 Revivify and then use Life Burst. Make sure that you only use Life Burst when in close proximity with other drakes. If you are moving to another location and far from other drakes it wont be as effective.

A good macro is:

/tar playerpet
/castsequence [target=playerpet] Revivify, Revivify, Life Burst

Surge of Power

Throughout Phase 3 Malygos will randomly target up to 5 people can cast Surge of Power. This can be mitigated by using your Flame Shield (Keymap 5) ability with combo points. Its a good idea to keep at least 2 combo points available and 25 energy so that when you see the following message:

Malygos fixes his eyes on you!

You can cast the shield in time to mitigate the damage. If you fail to use the shield in time this ability will almost always end up killing your drake even with heals. Usually you have about 3 seconds before the damage actually starts so you have time to build combo points if you have none to use.

  • For DPS - Use Flame Spike to build combo points (Key sequence: 1,1,5)
  • For Healers - Use Revivify to build combo points (Key sequence: 3,3,5)

Phase 3 Practice

Phase 3 can be practiced with the daily quest Aces High!. In order to unlock that daily, you first need to talk to Librarian Serrah down in the Transitus Shield and receive the start of the quest chain from her.
