Cataclysm Guide
[show guide]
Blizzard has expanded the functions of guilds exponentially with Cataclysm. No longer is a guild simply a grouping of friends playing WoW together, in Cataclysm its become much more. The new Guild advancement system introduced gives guild members the chance to participate and actually further their guild in many ways. Now guild members can earn achievements, buy "perks" from guild specific vendors and gain extra spells and passive abilities based on not only their performance in all aspects of the game but along with their fellow guild members as well.

Guild Achievements
With the introduction of Achievements in WotLK, players could accomplish different goals in the game to earn extra items, titles, or just for the fun of it in various aspects of WoW. From reputations to instances, there were achievements for tons of things. In Cataclysm, Guilds will now share in that ability. Guilds can now work together as a group on achievements where some will earn unique items and other rewards, or simply just for the sense of accomplishment.
The standard achievement panel has now been expanded to an additional tab to show your guilds earned and in progress achievements. These are done through many ways either as a group effort, individual contributed effort, or as a group over time.
Different achievements will unlock different rewards, such as the Dark Phoenix Hatchling or Reins of the Dark Phoenix.
Guild Experience and Levels
Along with Achievements, Guilds will now earn experience and level up like players do all the way to level 25. With each level increase, the guild will earn new "Perks". These are spells and abilities which are either passive, or can be actually used as a cast by guild members from the Spellbook.
Guild experience is earned in the following ways:
- Earning Guild achievements
- Boss kills in a raid or dungeon in which 75% of the party is from the same guild
- Rated Battleground or Arena wins in which 75% of the party is from the same guild
- Completing quests / daily quests that reward experience
- An individual player's faction reputation advancement
- An individual player's profession progression
To keep larger guilds even with smaller guilds, only the top 20 actively contributing guild members will be counted towards leveling.
Guild Perks
When Cataclysm was announced, Blizzard demonstrated a Guild Talent System similar to player talents where each level increase of a guild would earn a talent point and then those points could be placed into different talents. This guild leveling system was scrapped as explained by Ghostcrawler.
Guilds aren't a new feature for WoW, and we are really sensitive about imposing any kind of structure on them that might make you feel like you aren't supposed to stay with your current guildies any longer. To that end, there were flaws with guild talents that we didn't like.
Guilds are, for the most part, groups of friends. We don't want features to drive wedges between them. We don't want you to guild hop looking for the talents that suit you best; we want you to play (or in many cases keep playing) with your friends. With a talent tree, guilds would naturally have different talent trees, which creates a reason to bail or guild hop that doesn't exist today. If you didn't like the direction the guild was taking (for example, you were a PvP guy with a GM focused on raid-progression) you might feel like you should leave. That can happen today of course, but you can also stay in a PvE guild just because you like the members even if you don't participate in the same content because you're not losing out on inherent guild benefits.
Furthermore, we felt like the decision-making, for many guilds, would be up to a relatively few people, possibly as few as the guild master. Talent trees work for classes because the decision is up to you. We didn't want to create the risk of drama over choosing those talents or even not being consulted in choosing them.
Another advantage of the perks system is that it's easily expandable. If we want to add new levels and / or perks in later patches or expansions, we can, without having to rejuggle a talent tree.
The new method for guild bonuses is known as the "Perk" system which will automatically award new Perks with each level.
Guild "Perks" are different spells and passive abilities that are awarded automatically to all guild members. These range from bonuses using items or looting money from mobs, to different guild oriented spells.
Once a "Perk" is earned, it can be used immediately by all guild members regardless of level or reputation. Most Perks are passive bonuses though some require actual casting and use. Guild members can view the current list of current usable perks by opening the Spellbook and viewing the "Guild" tab. (Shown Right)
The list of "Perks" is as follows:
| Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 5%. | Level 2 | |

Guild Items and Reputation
In order to keep people from simply joining a leveled guild just to buy a bunch of guild items, Blizzard has instituted a system of reputation with guilds and its members. The reputation works similarly to regular reputations however it is earned with your guild by doing things in your guild and with your guild. Different items will require a certain reputation level with the guild in order to be purchased.
This reputation system works 2 ways as well, preventing guilds from inviting specific people to try and instantly further their achievements. Only after a certain reputation level are some personal Achievements and Feats of Strength counted toward the guild's own.
These items are unlocked by completing Guild Achievements and are for sale at the guild vendors in major cities. These items require certain levels of reputation with the guild for the right to purchase, but as soon as they are unlocked, any member with the required reputation level can make a purchase.
Reputation with the guild is earned the same way guild experience is earned as mentioned above.
If for any reason a member leaves the guild with purchased guild items, those items do not stay with them. They are automatically returned to the guild bank.
Guild Interface Changes
With all of the new changes to the Guild system in Cataclysm, Blizzard has also improved some of the clunky and annoying limitations of the guild interface screens.
The Guild Roster is now more informative and even includes the ability to see profession types and levels of each character, as well as a way to view the crafted items that character can make.
A new rank permission has also been added to the options. You can limit certain guild ranks to only be allowed for players with the Blizzard Authenticator.
Even the process of receiving a guild invite has been improved. Now when you are invited to join a guild, a nice screen displays what guild it is and that guild's level.
